WA's Forests at the Crossroads - Public Forum: June 11, 2011

WA’s forests at the crossroads

Ben Elton, the British author, comedian and thinker who now calls WA home, is pouring his energy into our forests

The WA Forest Alliance is very excited to announce that Ben Elton is going to be the MC for a public forum on Saturday the 11th of June at 4pmat the University of Notre Dame on the corner of Croake and Cliff streets in Fremantle.

The forum is free and everyone is invited.

“In 2011, the UN’s International Year of the Forests, the future of WA's native forests hangs in the balance. Change is inevitable and the choice is destruction or protection.

The Barnett Coalition Government and their logging agency are marketing our native forest timbers to energy companies as a feedstock for the furnaces. Plans are currently being made to burn our forests to generate electricity.

As well as this, new mining companies want to strip mine the karri and jarrah forests that we thought were safe from mining. This poses an unprecedented threat to our native forests.
Sawmills are closing, companies are leaving and change is inevitable. It is time to protect our forests.’

The forest forum at the University Of Notre Dame promises to be a rousing and inspirational event. MC Ben Elton will be joined on stage by expert speakers from WA and around the country.

The keynote speaker is Professor Brendan Mackey. Brendan Mackey is a Professor of environmental science at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, The Australian National University. He is a member of the IUCN Council, and co-chairs the Earth Charter International Council. Prof Mackey is an internationally recognised expert in forest ecosystems, carbon and climate change.

So come along and get involved, find out what’s happening with our forests from Australia’s leading scientists and campaigners and help choose the right future for WA’s magnificent, vulnerable forests.
